What Techniques are used for lip augmentation?
The approach taken during the procedure will vary, depending on the chosen course of treatment:
- Lip implants
A thin incision will be created in the corner of the lips so the implant(s) can be guided into place. It can take 1 – 3 weeks for swelling to subside and the implant(s) to settle into position; however, implants in the lips will create improvements that last for years. - Fat transfer
With a fat transfer, fat will be extracted (via liposuction) from an area with excess fat. This fat will then be cleaned and injected into your upper and/or lower lips until the desired fullness is achieved. Since a portion of fat can be reabsorbed in time, your lips can be filled a little more to compensate for this eventual loss. Lip enhancement using a fat transfer may be repeated over time to enhance or sustain your results, but typically, your results will last for several years. - Lip lift/vermilion advancement
During a lip lift, a small incision will be made on the lower and/or upper border of the lip. An area of skin outside the mouth will be removed so the lips can be stretched to replace the excised skin and stitched in place. This lip advancement surgery creates lasting results that improve the size and shape of the mouth. - Dermal fillers
Nonsurgical lip augmentation may be done with dermal fillers, like JUVÉDERM® or Restylane®. Injections can be performed in one of our treatment rooms as an outpatient procedure. Depending on the dermal filler brand, a local anesthetic may be part of the formula or a numbing cream can be applied on the lips before the treatment. Once your lips are cleaned, multiple injections will be administered in the needed areas of the lips and then massaged to give more smooth results. You should be allowed to leave after your procedure to resume your regular activities.
